This fact is making everyone get worried about their lung health. People are looking out for ways to boost their immunity and keep their lungs healthy, to save themselves from the deadly virus. After all, healthy lungs are a defense mechanism of our immune system.
In one of the latest videos by Luke Coutinho, Holistic Lifestyle Coach, he talks about five easy ways to keep your lungs healthy.
Why our body needs mucus?
Our body needs mucus, as it acts as a defense mechanism. When we breathe some bacteria or virus, it’s trapped by the mucus in the lungs, which prevents it further from going into our body. This mucus is later eliminated by the body through sneezing, coughing or having a runny nose. The problem arises when you have too much mucus built up in your lungs. People with COPD, asthma, bronchitis have more mucus in their lungs.
In order to keep our lungs healthy to fight the germs, our body needs to be able to break down mucus rapidly. Here is what you can do
1. Methi dana (fenugreek seeds)
Take a tablespoon of methi seeds and boil them in water for 4-5 minutes, strain and drink it warm. You can have one-two cups in a day. It breaks down mucus, which your body expels later.
Deposited mucus makes your body a breeding ground for germs, pathogens, bacteria or viral. Breaking down mucus as quickly as possible is the best way to keep your lungs healthy.
2. Pranayama and exercise
Deep breathing helps us in the same way by breaking down the mucus and expelling it from the body. Exercising makes us breathe heavier; the heavier we breathe, the more mucus breaks down.
3. Salt water gargle
Boil some water with salt in it. Now let it cool down to lukewarm and then gargle with it. This easy remedy also helps in breaking down the mucus.
If you have a steamer at home, use that or you can simply boil water in a big bowl and cover your head with a towel and take steam from that. The hot air from the water helps in expelling the extra mucus and thus keeps your lungs healthy.
